Key Finding: It took approximately 27 months from the launch of ChatGPT (November 2022) to the structural consolidation of public concern about AI's financial sustainability (January 2025, DeepSeek shock). During this window, over $750 billion in AI infrastructure capital was deployed with minimal public scrutiny of the underlying economics. The Sustainability Gap is the duration of that window — the period in which investment consensus runs ahead of financial reality.

The Phenomenon: AI Financial Sustainability Concerns

The phenomenon under analysis is not artificial intelligence itself, but the emergence of structured public concern about its financial sustainability. The distinction matters: attention for "artificial intelligence" peaked on Wikipedia in July 2023 at 715,551 views/month and has since declined to 304,218 (June 2026, −58%). Meanwhile, attention for "AI bubble" went from near-zero to 93,459 views/month (November 2025), and "AI costs" on Google Trends went from 0 to 100 between 2023 and 2026. The hype curve is cooling. The scrutiny curve is rising. The gap between these two trajectories is the Sustainability Gap.

"AI Bubble" — Primary Signal

Companion signal: 'Dot-com bubble' spiked to 138,450 views (Oct 2025) — highest monthly traffic in the article's entire history. The historical parallel was actively drawn.
Reddit Primary: r/wallstreetbets, r/stocks (mature)
Secondary: r/technology, r/MachineLearning
Discourse: split between investment thesis and sustainability concerns
2026 shift: annual 'bubble' thread pattern now continuous, not seasonal
r/earlyretirement: active AI cost discussions
Three-source convergence confirmed. Google Trends at peak (100), Wikipedia sustained above 30,000/month since mid-2025, Reddit discourse shifted from seasonal to continuous. All three channels independently confirm structural consolidation of sustainability concerns.

"AI Costs" — Companion Signal

2022: 0 | 2023: 1 | 2024: 2
2025: 36 | 2026: 100 (peak)
Lag behind 'AI bubble': ~6–12 months
Signal: operational cost awareness now matches bubble narrative intensity
Wikipedia Proxy page: 'AI boom'
Avg: 21,672 views/month
Peak: 53,520 views (Oct 2025)
June 2026: 30,990 views/month
Signal: sustained informational curiosity about the economics of the AI investment cycle
Context OpenAI: $6B revenue Q1 2026, ~$4B burn. Cash-positive projected ~2030
Hyperscaler capex: $500B+ annually (2026)
NBER Feb 2026: 90% of firms report no AI impact on productivity
Sora shutdown: Mar 2026 (cost-driven)
Uber: consumed 2026 AI coding budget in 4 months
'AI costs' lags 'AI bubble' by approximately 6–12 months on Google Trends, suggesting a two-phase attention pattern: first the bubble narrative consolidates (financial press, investors), then operational cost awareness follows (enterprise adopters, procurement teams). The financial question precedes the operational question.
// 02 · THE SUSTAINABILITY GAP

Measuring the Window of Uncontested Consensus

The Sustainability Gap is defined as the time between the emergence of a dominant technology narrative and the structural consolidation of financial sustainability concerns about that technology. For artificial intelligence, the key events are documented below.

Nov 2022
ChatGPT launch · AI hype cycle begins. Zero public scrutiny of economics.
Jul 2023
Wikipedia "Artificial intelligence" peaks at 715,551/mo · Maximum uncritical attention. Hype apex.
Jan 2023
GT "AI bubble" first measurable (score 4) · First scrutiny signal appears. Background noise level.
2024
GT "AI bubble" reaches 7 · Hyperscaler capex exceeds $241B · Scrutiny growing but below structural threshold. Capital deployment accelerates.
Jan 2025
DeepSeek shock — Nvidia loses $600B in one day · Inflection point. Chinese model matches US performance at fraction of cost. The economics become the story.
Oct 2025
Wikipedia "Dot-com bubble" spikes to 138,450/mo · All-time record for that page. Historical parallel actively drawn by public.
Nov 2025
Wikipedia "AI bubble" peaks at 93,459/mo · Peak scrutiny. Nvidia passes $5T market cap same month.
Feb 2026
NBER study: 90% of firms report no AI impact on productivity · Institutional validation. Academic research confirms productivity gap.
Mar 2026
OpenAI shuts down Sora (cost-driven) · First visible cost casualty. Disney partnership dissolved. 6 months post-launch.
Jun 2026
FT analysis: OpenAI burns ~$27B/year, cash-positive ~2030 · Mainstream financial press. Uber exhausts 2026 AI budget in 4 months.
Jul 2026
GT "AI bubble" + "AI costs" both reach 100 · Full structural consolidation. Both queries at simultaneous all-time peak.
The Gap: From ChatGPT launch (November 2022) to DeepSeek inflection (January 2025) = 27 months. During this window, the AI investment consensus was structurally uncontested in public attention. Over $750 billion in infrastructure capital was committed. The Gap closed when three signals converged: a market shock (DeepSeek), institutional research (NBER), and product-level cost casualties (Sora).
// 03 · THE REALITY CHECK RATIO

A New Metric: Scrutiny as a Proportion of Attention

The Reality Check Ratio measures what proportion of attention for a technology is critical attention. It is calculated as Wikipedia pageviews for the scrutiny signal ("AI bubble") divided by pageviews for the technology itself ("Artificial intelligence"), expressed as a percentage. When the Ratio crosses 10%, the investment consensus is no longer structurally uncontested.

Period"Artificial intelligence" views/mo"AI bubble" views/moReality Check Ratio
H2 2023~580,000~2,0000.3%
H1 2024~375,000~8,0002.1%
H2 2024~340,000~18,0005.3%
H1 2025~330,000~28,0008.5%
H2 2025~320,000~70,00021.9%
H1 2026~335,000~55,00016.4%
The Reality Check Ratio crossed 10% in H2 2024 and peaked at 21.9% in H2 2025. The peak coincides with the DeepSeek shock and the dot-com parallel spike. The partial retreat to 16.4% in H1 2026 indicates narrative stabilization — the debate is no longer "is AI a bubble?" but "what happens next?" — not resolution. Both GT queries remaining at 100 confirms structural, not transient, concern.

The Dot-Com Signal

The single strongest data point in this report is not about AI at all. In October 2025, the Wikipedia page for "Dot-com bubble" recorded 138,450 views — the highest monthly pageview count in the article's entire history. People were not just questioning AI economics. They were actively searching for the most relevant historical precedent. The informational curiosity spike for a 25-year-old financial crisis, occurring simultaneously with AI scrutiny peaks, is the clearest available signal that the market's pattern-matching apparatus has engaged.

// 04 · IMPLICATIONS

What the Sustainability Gap Measures

1. The Gap is the risk window. For 27 months, over $750 billion in AI infrastructure capital was committed during a period of structurally uncontested consensus. Capital deployed inside the Gap is priced on enthusiasm. Capital deployed after the Gap closes is priced on scrutiny. The economic characteristics of these two phases differ materially: valuations, cost of capital, tolerance for negative unit economics, and willingness to fund pre-revenue companies all shift when the Reality Check Ratio crosses 10%.

2. The scrutiny signal leads the correction. Wikipedia "AI bubble" peaked in November 2025. "Dot-com bubble" peaked in October 2025. Both peaks preceded any sustained market correction. The informational curiosity spike precedes the repricing event. This is consistent with the broader Zorthex finding that attention diffusion is a leading indicator of institutional behavior — not a trailing one.

3. The cost signal lags the bubble signal. "AI costs" on Google Trends reached 100 in 2026, approximately 6–12 months after "AI bubble" crossed structural thresholds. This two-phase pattern suggests that financial narrative (bubble/not-bubble) consolidates first among investors and financial press, followed by operational cost awareness among enterprise adopters. For alternative data applications, the bubble signal is the leading indicator; the cost signal is the confirming indicator.

4. The Ratio is replicable. The Reality Check Ratio can be calculated for any emerging technology or investment theme where a hype query and a scrutiny query both exist on Google Trends and Wikipedia. Quantum computing, biotech, autonomous vehicles, blockchain — each has both a technology curve and a scrutiny curve. The gap between them, measured across three sources, is a structural property of every technology cycle. Zorthex can measure it.

// 05 · PRODUCT CONCEPT

The Sustainability Gap Index

This report demonstrates the feasibility of a Sustainability Gap Index: a real-time metric measuring the distance between technology enthusiasm and financial scrutiny for any emerging technology or investment theme. The index requires two inputs: a technology attention query and a scrutiny/cost concern query. The ratio between them, cross-referenced with Wikipedia pageviews and Reddit community assessment, produces a three-source verified gap measurement.

The index is descriptive, not predictive. It measures when consensus breaks, not what happens after. Two curves, one ratio, one time. No estimates — only verified public attention data in real time.

// 06 · DECLARED LIMITATIONS

What This Report Does Not Do

This report does not predict whether AI is a financial bubble or when a correction will occur. It measures the temporal gap between enthusiasm and scrutiny. Descriptive only.

Google Trends data is at annual granularity. Monthly data would provide sharper L estimates. The 27-month Gap figure is approximate (±3 months).

The Reality Check Ratio uses Wikipedia pageviews as a proxy for public scrutiny. Wikipedia editors' decisions to create, merge, or redirect pages affect the signal. The "AI bubble" article was created in 2025; pageview data before that date uses the proxy page "AI boom."

Reddit assessment is qualitative (narrative direction, community maturity), not quantitative. No vote counts or post frequencies are cited.

The $750 billion capex figure is compiled from public reporting (hyperscaler earnings, Financial Times analysis, Gartner projections). It is an order-of-magnitude estimate, not an audited figure.

The 10% Reality Check Ratio threshold is observational, not theoretical. It is derived from this single case study. Additional cases (dot-com, crypto, biotech) would be required to validate or adjust the threshold. This report presents it as a hypothesis, not a calibrated parameter.
